Edwardian 1901 - 1910

By Edwardian times, ladies' gowns had slimmed further, shedding much of the surface decoration and becoming much more tailored. Thanks partly to the suffragettes, ladies gained freedom from strict corsetry, and the flowing tea gown became fashionable.

Gentlemen were still swathed in their tweeds and waistcoats, but blazers and straws started to make an appearance along with interesting sporting wear.

Girls began to wear smocks over their dresses and wide collars on their dresses, while boys emulated their fathers with 3-piece suits, breeches or plus fours.

And we mustn’t forget the butlers and maids who busied themselves attending to all these Beautiful People.

Suffragette (before demonstration)

Women gained the right to vote in Australia in 1902, in the UK in 1928 and in the US in 1920. Our suffragette wears a coat or jacket over a lace dress, with a straw hat, a banner, and a sash with WSPU (Women’s Social and Political Union), which was a favourite of that famous suffragette Mrs Emily Pankhurst.
